ARCTIC SPITZ BREED HISTORY

Picture
Over the last decade the popularity of the Arctic Spitz (Pomsky) has soared, worldwide.

This adorable, moderately-sized, athletic little dog is about the cutest thing on four legs - so this will cover what you need to know about the breed history, where it is recognized... and how you can find one for your very own!

We will be covering in some detail the basic breed history, however all three variations (toy, miniature and standard) will be included under the name, "Arctic Spitz".  As we discuss breed club and registration affiliations,
it is good to keep in mind that registries are merely databases.  They do not denote quality, working ability, breeder experience or practices... and they are not what makes or breaks an animal's genetics.

We are members of the AMERICAN POMSKY KENNEL CLUB.  We love their push toward proper structure, health, temperament, and education!

Shown to the left is our darling stud, RunAmok Kavik.  He's a lovely example of the breed and we are incredibly excited to see what our future holds!

AMERICAN POMSKY KENNEL CLUB BREED STANDARD FOR SIZE/COAT

SIZE VARIATIONS
TOY:  Under 10” tall at the shoulder, and up to 15 pounds. MINI: Up to 14” at the shoulder, and between 12-20 pounds.
STANDARD: 14-18” tall at the shoulder, and between 20-35 pounds.

Dogs are heavy for their height, solidly built, with moderate bone. Male reflects masculinity, without coarseness. Bitches, femininity but without slightness of bone. The Pomsky should not be fragile, frail or too heavy to be athletic.  Dogs that fall between categories should be judged by height rather than weight.

COAT
Standard - short length, dense fur, generally under 1” in length
lush - medium length, dense fur, generally under 3” in length (may also be coined ‘Medium’)
Wooly - long length, dense fur, generally more than 3” in length

INTERNATIONAL POMSKY ASSOCIATION (IPA)

Formed in May of 2014, the INTERNATIONAL POMSKY ASSOCIATION (IPA) was the original breed club for the "Pomsky".

CONTINENTAL KENNEL CLUB (CKC)

The CONTINENTAL KENNEL CLUB INC was founded in 1991, so is a "new kid on the block" when compared to giants such as the American Kennel Club or the United Kennel Club.   The CKC is an all-breed canine registry hosting an incredible array of experienced breeders, dog trainers, dog owners and other varied canine professionals. They started with exceptional customer service and have continued to expand their services from registration, owner/breeder education, sanctioned shows and events, advertising and more.

The CKC allows for the registration of "designer" breeds, but under specific conditions; animals must be born to purebred, registered parents and the resulting offspring are registered as "non-purebred" in these instances.  An explanation for this practice is found on their site, "
While “designer breed” is a relatively new term, the crossing of existing breeds to create new breeds is nothing new. Most purebred dogs recognized today are less than 200 years old and the result of crossing the existing breeds of the time. For example, the Doberman Pinscher was once a “designer breed,’ that consisted of seven different breeds, including the Weimaraner, the Rottweiler, and the German Pinscher. Today, it is one of the most easily recognizable dog breeds."

Our foundation Arctic Spitz come from purebred, registered lineages (Siberian Husky and Pomeranian.)  We have chosen to register our dogs and puppies through the CKC as a way to maintain proper record of our foundation animals and future generations of Arctic Spitz.  But... there's more!

AMERICAN RARE BREED ASSOCIATION (ARBA)

Established in 1991, the AMERICAN RARE BREED ASSOCIATION (ARBA) is a nationally-recognized conformation show venue, founded for the purpose of allowing unrecognized or otherwise rare breeds the opportunity to compete in a show venue.  To date, ARBA has facilitated the acceptance of 45 rare or new breeds to the two largest registries in the nation.

Anxious to have this lovely canine recognized as an official breed, the IPA has been diligently working toward ARBA acceptance, under the name, "Arctic Spitz".  In July of 2019, it was announced ARBA would begin registering the Pomsky, under the official name, "Arctic Spitz".

ABOUT RUNAMOK PUPS

We are members of the APKC and currently register through the Continental Kennel Club, under the popular moniker, "Pomsky".  We DNA test in order to show proof our puppies are true Arctic Spitz (Pomskies).  If you have further questions, please feel free to contact us for more information.
