THE ARCTIC SPITZ

Picture
There are very few dog breeds in this world as adorable and charming as the Arctic Spitz. Enchanting, robust, small-to-medium dogs with moderate bone, plush double-coats, small pricked ears, and alert, inquisitive personalities, this charming, up-and-coming breed is a blend of Siberian Husky and Pomeranian lineages.

Looking beyond the obvious “eye candy” appeal you will be hard-pressed to find another breed as charismatic! The Arctic Spitz fills the desire for a small, Husky-like companion with a darling, people-oriented temperament.

At first glance, a seemingly unlikely combination, yet both breeds are Spitz-type dogs and their ancient past intertwines, making for an undeniably extraordinary companion!

We have long been breed "purists", but after decades of breeding, our hearts were captivated and then completely whisked away by this debonair little dog!

For those researching, the terms "Pomksy" or "Miniature Husky" are widely used to the Arctic Spitz - but in some cases are not the same breed.  The term "Miniature Husky" has become somewhat of an umbrella term, frequently including dogs of varied genetics - such as mixes with German Shepherd, Shiba Inu, and a mod-podge of "super-mutts" - so it is important to do your research before making a purchase.  ARCTIC SPITZ BREED HISTORY

GENERATIONS OF HEALTHY PUPPIES

With over 65 years combined experience breeding dogs and raising healthy puppies, we understand the qualities that make a breed "outstanding"!  Our family maintains a small, elect breeding program; great emphasis is placed on sound, family-oriented temperaments and we have an experienced eye for functional structure. Health is confirmed through genetic testing, ophthalmology, and veterinary exams.  What does this mean for our owners?  Not only are RunAmok pups lovely in form, but also free of the genetic conditions afflicting dogs from unproven or untested lines.

All this, however, is just the beginning! Producing healthy, long-lived animals requires more than just the basics. We have found raising puppies holistically with natural, species-appropriate foods and avoiding chemicals wherever possible is key to proper development and long-term good health. A review of our
NATURAL CANINE section will provide an overview of the holistic care given our to animals and is vital to understanding our natural-rearing philosophy.

In the end, generations of RunAmok are the proof “natural-rearing” is the very best we can do for our pups.

WHY GENETIC HEALTH TESTING?

If you are considering adding an Arctic Spitz puppy to your family, it is important to be aware of the most common health conditions which may affect this breed.  In most cases, genetic testing may be done to help rule out certain issues in breeding stock, thus eliminating the risks of affected offspring.

Like we do here, most reputable breeders take this testing to the next level - using the most advanced modern genetic testing to rule out inheritable conditions.  We test through Embark, currently screening for over 200 different conditions.  Our breeding animals (puppy parents) are neither affected by any of these conditions nor are they carriers - so our puppies are all cleared by parentage.  We take this even farther, with ophthalmology exams and well-puppy exams - to ensure our puppy families receive truly healthy puppies!

DEGENERATIVE MYELOPATHY

Degenerative Myelopathy (DM), is a progressive disease of the spinal cord in older dogs, leading to paralysis and, eventually, death.  All of our breeding dogs are genetically screened and cleared of DM (non-carriers), so resulting litters are cleared by parentage.

OPHTHALMOLOGY EXAMS

As with all breeds, the Arctic Spitz may be prone to flaws or genetic eye defects, ranging from minor cosmetic imperfections to severe defects which impair vision and may lead to blindness in an affected dog.  We genetically screen our adult dogs to rule out inheritable eye conditions.

It is impossible to detect some eye conditions without doing a physical eye exam, complete with eye dilation, so in addition to genetic screening, we have breeding animals examined and cleared by our licensed Veterinary Ophthalmologist before breeding.

CANCER

The truth of the matter is that cancer is on the rise for all breeds.  Statistically, an alarming one in two dogs, nationwide, will suffer from cancer - and it is, now, the most common form of non-accidental death in canines!  There are many theories as to the "why" cancer has increased so significantly, but we believe it is a combination of factors.  We believe "natural rearing" is the most effective way to promote long-term health.

Modern care is convenient, but not without pitfalls.  It is impossible to feed processed foods and fill a body with toxins without causing damage.  You can learn more below...

CRASH COURSE IN PET NUTRITION

Regardless of genetics, there are some things we can do to help prevent illness in our pets!  Please take some time to review CANINE NUTRITION, as well as our NATURAL REARING information.  We believe you will be very excited with what you learn!
