| DR. JEAN DODDS' MINIMAL VACCINE USE CANINE VACCINATION PROTOCOL – 2011 (Verified) W. Jean Dodds, DVM HEMOPET 938 Stanford Street Santa Monica, CA 90403 310/828-4804 Fax: 310/ 453-5240 e-mail: hemopet at hotmail com (remove spaces, use @ symbol and .com) Note: The following vaccine protocol is offered for those dogs where minimal vaccinations are advisable or desirable. The schedule is one I recommend and should not interpreted to mean that other protocols recommended by a veterinarian would be less satisfactory. It's a matter of professional judgment and choice. Perform vaccine antibody titers for distemper and parvovirus every three years thereafter, or more often, if desired. Vaccinate for rabies virus according to the law, except where circumstances indicate that a written waiver needs to be obtained from the primary care veterinarian. In that case, a rabies antibody titer can also be performed to accompany the waiver request. See www.rabieschallengefund.org. NOTE: I called and spoke to Dr. Dodds, and during that time also received her permission to place this information on our website. She explained that in an ideal, minimal vaccination schedule, one would vaccinate with the Distemper + Parvovirus (MLV) once between 9-10 weeks and then again at 14 weeks of age. This would be followed by a Rabies vaccination between 20-24 weeks. Followed by one final Distemper + Parvovirus booster after 1 year. An additional Rabies booster, 3-4 weeks later. Annual vaccinations are not needed. NOTE: I have received numerous questions regarding the above outline. The "optional" vaccinations seem to be confusing, so to clarify, "why the 'optional' phrase?" If the puppy has received vaccinations on a different schedule (younger than 9-10 weeks), the schedule would be off and the puppy might require a later shot at 16-18 weeks. |
