:: DOES YOUR PUPPY BITE TOO HARD WHILE PLAYING?::
|
This is a separate, and far less dangerous issue from a puppy who snaps at people out of
answers must be quite painful, even destructive if not addressed early on. Just like
children, puppies need to be properly trained! Left to themselves, they will play roughly -
so you must be responsible and train them to play gently...
For this to work effectively, you must still have a thumb or finger in your puppy's mouth.
We generally set up this scenario purposely versus waiting for random "puppy attacks" -
ha! Allowing the puppy to play with our fingers and hands or holding toys within puppies'
reach is usually all it takes to get a perfect training opportunity!
When playing with your puppy, and the puppy begins biting your hands/fingers too
roughly... As the puppy is biting down, say "No, Soft" and wrap the rest of your fingers
around the top of your puppy's nose. Push upward against the roof of your pup's mouth
with a mild amount of pressure, while firmly (but gently) grasping across the top of your
pup's muzzle. Roles are now reversed, as your pup no longer has YOU... YOU have
him/her!
Puppy will be surprised! He will try to "spit" your thumb/finger out, pull back and
struggle a bit. Hang on for 1-3 seconds, repeat "Soft" and let go. Your puppy will most
likely come back with renewed gusto, thinking this may be a new game he can win! Allow
him to capture you again and as soon as he begins to bite down hard, repeat with a "NO,
Soft", and immediately push up against the roof of his mouth, grasping more firmly
around his muzzle. Hold for a slightly longer period this time, maybe 3-4 seconds, repeat
"NO, soft" and let go. With a tenacious puppy, this may be repeated several times daily
over a course of several days. A bit firmer grasp and slightly longer hold time can be used
with each repeat. Do not hold longer than 5 seconds at a time, however, or your pup may
become frightened and that is NEVER the intention of training.
Praise your puppy each time you let him go. He will associate your letting go with his
letting go of you. He will quickly learn that "Soft" means gently chewing on your finger,
hand or whatever else he is chewing too roughly on.
Make the sessions short and ALWAYS end on a good note, with the puppy thinking YOU
have won.
REMEMBER: The inside of your puppy's mouth is delicate. Do not use your fingernail to
push up on the roof of its mouth. I usually manipulate this training so that my thumb is in
the pup's mouth. I use the pad of my thumb to press the roof of the mouth, so there is no
chance of injury.
